As a visual savant with a deep interest in the stock market, Tim decided 30 years ago to study the entire history of the stock market going back hundreds of years to the time of Alexander Hamilton. It took him decades of microscopic study of thousands of stock price charts before finally making his discovery; a phenomenon found throughout nature to also exist in the historical charts of most all financial instruments, scale invariance.
The Discovery
Natural patterns are considered scale invariant when their structure or behavior persists regardless of the size, or in our case price, at which they are observed. One can zoom in and out and still see these patterns repeating at difference scales. This is often associated with fractal geometry and is commonly seen in biological systems, galaxy formations, tree branches, river networks and mathematics.
We can identify stock price patterns by studying the entire price path history of a stock. What we observe are repeating price path structures that increase in scale during expansions and decrease in scale during
collapses or long drawdowns. These fractals guide us through expansions, collapses, drawdowns, consolidation periods, peaks, bottoms and even gaps. As asset managers navigating the risk and reward environment of the financial markets, what better way is there to successfully accomplish this than using an instrument’s repeating pattern and historical archetype as a guide?
